Week Five Results








Jeff Farwell turned his game up a notch in Week 5.




The Report: Week 5 of the LTHL proved to be fiercely fought, as 11
players showed to hone their skills in advance of the Big 55 tournament on
Aug. 16. The decision was made early on to do a double round-robin to get as
much PT in as possible before the big tournament in two weeks. Defending
league champ Ron Marsik, who undoubtedly has to be one of the favorites to
crack the final four at Big 55, took first place, going 10-0 in the opening
round robin before finishing 10-0. Jim Rzonca was steady, going 8-2 in both
round robins to take second. Rob Chargo finished third with a strong 15-5
record. Chargo, an '80s TH veteran on the comeback trail, would be this
writer's dark horse pick to make a strong showing at Big 55. He's only been
playing Stiga for a few months, but he's picked up the game incredibly well
and is using his TH skills to be competitive quickly. Finishing fourth was
Jeff Farwell, who was the CTHL rookie of the year on Coleco earlier this year.
Farwell seems to be turning the corner, at least in the LTHL, on the Stiga, as
he finished 12-8. He defeated Eric Krol twice, and that dropped Krol down to
fifth place for the evening with an 11-9 record. Jeff Thill and Garry Butler
tied for sixth, but Thill won a one-game playoff 5-2 to wrest the half-point
from Butler. Thill was down 2-8 after the first round robin, but rallied to go
8-2 in the second round robin, gaining strength as the other players were
flagging.


Other highlights of the evening: Farwell scored the most shutouts (4)....In
the first round, Chargo went up on Krol 4-0 before Krol erased that lead in
the final two minutes. Chargo got the game-winner on a LW-C goal...Overtime
contests in Round One: Salazar over Jeff Thill 2-1, Marsik over Rzonca 4-3,
Butler over Rich Thill 5-4, Marsik over Rich Thill 4-3, Krol over Salazar 5-4.
Round Two OT: Jeff Thill over Chargo 3-2 in a thriller, Jeff Thill 3-2 over
Salazar in their second OT of the night, Jeff Thill over Krol 2-1, and Krol
over Salazar 4-3 in their second OT tilt. Salazar was up 3-1 before Krol got
two to tie. Salazar and Krol each nearly ended OT before Krol put one home in
a game both men needed.
