It was a beautiful night for table hockey in Lemont as the LTHL kicked off its second season of Stiga fun. Commissioner Jerry Pytlewski started off the evening with a short speech, welcoming everyone and plugging the Big 55 tournament on Aug. 16. Action then got underway with Jeff Thill and Eric Krol keeping the games moving. Jason Walker scored the first goal of the season off his brother-in-law, Krol, and went up 6-3 in the first game of the night. With just 45 seconds left, Krol started to click and found the net four times in a row to escape with an improbable 7-6 win.
Fourteen players showed up to test their Stiga skills. Last year's semi-finalist Jim Rzonca took top honors for the night, going 11-2. His only losses were to Adam Thill and the wily veteran Rich Thill, Adam's father. Scott Pytlewski and Rob Chargo, who came all the way down from Gurnee, at least a 90-minute drive, tied at 10-3. But Scott held the tiebreaker by winning their head-to-head matchup. Scott was fresh off his Group C win at Rose Bowl II in Montreal last weekend. Eric Krol, Adam Thill, and Dan Lord logjammed at 9-4, but Krol held wins over both of them and Adam beat Lord in the round robin to sort out the ties. That left older brother Jeff Thill getting the final point of the evening with a strong 8-5 showing.
Highlights of the evening: Jim Gove put in the most goals of the evening in one game in a 10-2 pasting of Dan Lord. "Everything just clicked," explained Gove....OT games abounded, as Walker dumped Jerry Pytlewski 6-5, Rich Thill beat Rzonca 4-3, Krol downed Bill McDaniel Jr. 4-3, Lord beat Chargo 4-3, and Jeff Thill bested Krol 4-3, all in sudden death....In a rematch of last year's Geritol Cup, the senior Pytlewski beat Rich Thill 3-2....No brotherly love as Adam defeated Jeff Thill 1-0....Chargo showed fire beating Krol 4-2...Dan Lord scored the most goals of the night with 53. Krol was one behind and Rzonca notched 51.
