The Report: Labor Day weekend was no weekend off for the LTHL, which
returned to regular-season action Saturday, Aug. 30 following the Big 55 Stiga
U.S. Open on Aug. 16. Ron Marsik, a quarterfinalist (and nearly a semi
-finalist) at the Big 55, had a spotless reccord, going 16-0 in a double round
-robin tournament. He even avenged his Big 555 loss to Jerry Pytlewski.
With nine players participating, the two-fer was in order. The story of the
night was Jeff Thill, who missed the Big 55 but showed no signs of rust,
stepping up with a 12-4 record to take second. His only losses were to Marsik
(a pair of OT contests), his father Rich early on and to Eric Krol. Jim Rzonca
took third at 10-6. Dan Lord and Krol tied at 9-7 for fourth, and since they
split their round robin matchup, a one-game playoff was in order. Lord stormed
out to a 6-3 lead, with Krol getting two late ones before running out of time.
Lord gets the extra point for the evening. Krol started out 0-5 before
rebounding with a 9-2 finish, his streak broken by a one -goal loss to Marsik
in the last 30 seconds. A welcome newcomer was Jim Salazar, brother of
LTHL/CTHL veteran Joe Salazar. Jim started off on fire at 3-1 before settling
back down to earth. We hope Jim becomes a regular in both Chicago-area
leagues.
