Just an absolutely perfect early summer night for table hockey at Commissioner Jerry Pytlewski's place in Lemont. Our league is only in its second year, but tonight had probably top-to-bottom the best competition ever. No easy games and some top players had tough nights. Making his debut was last year's champion, Ron Marsik, who went 12-1 to take first place tonight in the round robin of 14 players. Hard-charging Rob Chargo finished second with an 11-2 record, losing only to Marsik and Dan Lord. Chargo moves into second place in the overall standings ahead of Jim Rzonca. Chargo has only been playing Stiga since last month, although he's a veteran of the Coleco/Munro wars of the '70s, so he's no rookie either. Finishing third was Mike Lisowski, the CTHL (Coleco) champion, going 9-4 to rebound off a tough trip to Montreal for RBCII. Three players deadlocked at 8-5, with Eric Krol holding tiebreaking wins over Adam Thill and Rzonca. Adam beat Rzonca for the second straight week, and that proved a tiebreaker in his advantage. Getting the final extra point of the evening was Dan Lord at 7-6. Jim Rzonca described last season's CTHL as a "shark tank," and tonight's LTHL action was definitely the same. Not a lot of weak sisters here tonight.
Highlights of the evening: Marsik was near unstoppable, losing to Rzonca 5-1 and beating everyone else. He posted three shutouts. Will Sundwall came the closest, losing 1-0 to Marsik. Overtime games abounded once again: Farwell over Lord 4-3, Sundwall over Jeff Thill 2-1, Pytlewski over Will 3-2, Jeff Thilll over his cousin Farwell 4-3, Chargo upended Adam Thill 4-3, Joe Salazar over Lisowski 4-3, Rzonca 5-4 over Pytlewski, Sundwall 3-2 over Salazar, Lisowski 2-1 over Sundwall, and Butler over Pytlewski 4-3. Whew. That's a lotta OT. In my opinion, Jerry Pytlewski played great tonight. The stats might not show it, but he was in most of his games and played tough against some top competition. Anaheim must've turned the switch in the comish.
